In 2008 Liane Lang created a series of images at Casa Guidi, the erstwhile
home of Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Robert Browning in Florence. The apartment
is now a museum and attempts to re-create as closely as possible the living
quarters, furniture and art work as they were when the Brownings lived there.
This verisimilitude creates an uncanny atmosphere, presence and absence filling
the rooms in equal measure. Lang uses a figure dressed up as Elizabeth, which
she poses in the rooms like a ghostly visitation from the past. The titles
in The series are mostly taken from Elizabeths poems.
